Getting Started

This article explains how to perform a focus calibration using a printed text sheet and the camera's IR remote control.

Position the test sheet at the correct distance for your camera, then press the following buttons one after another:

* → # → FOCUS −

Preparation

What You Need

  • The camera and its compatible IR remote control.
  • A sheet of white paper with clearly printed black text, as shown in the calibration setup.
  • A tape measure.
  • A monitor or live video view to check the camera image.

Place the camera on a stable surface. Position the printed sheet upright, facing the lens, and use good, even lighting so the text is clearly visible.

Camera-to-Target Distance

Use the distance indicated below for your camera. Measure from the front of the lens to the printed sheet.

CameraDistance to the printed sheet
CM3x series150 cm (1.5 m)
CM8x series150 cm (1.5 m)
CM90150 cm (1.5 m)

Note: For a camera model not listed above, contact AVONIC Support to confirm the correct calibration procedure.

Calibration Procedure

  1. Prepare the camera.
Switch the camera on and make sure you can see its live image. Check that the IR remote control operates the intended camera.
  2. Position the test sheet.
Place the printed sheet at 150 cm (1.5 m) for the CM3x series, CM8x series or CM90. Aim the camera so the text is in the centre of the image.
  3. Start the focus calibration.
Point the IR remote control towards the camera and press *, then #, then FOCUS −. Press each button separately, in this order.
  4. Allow the calibration to finish.
Keep the camera and the printed sheet in position while the calibration runs. Keep the camera powered on.
  5. Physically switch the camera off and on.
After the calibration has finished, we recommend fully disconnecting the camera's power, including PoE if used, so the camera is completely off. Reconnect power to switch it back on. A software reboot does not replace this physical power cycle.
  6. Check the result.
Check the sharpness of the printed text in the live image. Then test focus again at the distances and zoom positions used in your installation.

Important: The sequence uses the FOCUS − button, not the ZOOM − button. Do not press the three buttons simultaneously.

After Calibration: We recommend physically disconnecting and reconnecting the camera's power. A reboot through the web interface or control software is not sufficient for this step.

Troubleshooting

The Camera Does Not Respond

  • Check that the remote control operates the intended camera.
  • Check the batteries and make sure the remote control is pointing towards the camera.
  • Check that the buttons were pressed separately and in the correct order.

The Image Is Still Out of Focus

Check the camera-to-target distance, the position of the printed sheet and the lighting. If the problem persists, contact AVONIC Support and include:

  • The camera model and serial number.
  • The hardware version and installed firmware versions.
  • The distance used during calibration.
  • A short description of the problem, with an image or video showing the result.
  • Give an introduction to the topic of this How-to article. For example, let's consider that this article explains how to use article template
